When to go
Glasgow's proximity to the hills means year-round walking is genuinely practical. Ben Lomond and The Cobbler are busy June–September but manageable year-round with early starts. The Campsie Fells are excellent November–March for quieter winter days. Loch Lomond and Balmaha paths are busy at summer weekends — mid-week visits dramatically reduce congestion on the lower paths. Spring (April–May) gives the best combination of good weather, long daylight, and smaller crowds.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the nearest Munro to Glasgow?
- Ben Lomond (974m), about 43km from Glasgow city centre in a straight line, climbed from Rowardennan. By public transport it is awkward: the train reaches Balloch and McColls 309 reaches Balmaha, but there is no regular bus on to Rowardennan, so most walkers drive. It is Scotland's most southerly Munro and one of the most popular.
- Can I reach Scottish hills from Glasgow without a car?
- Yes, for several. ScotRail trains serve Arrochar & Tarbet (The Cobbler) and Balloch, McColls 309 continues from Alexandria to Balmaha for Conic Hill, and the West Highland Way starts at Milngavie, on its own railway line. Citylink coaches serve Tyndrum and further north.
- How far is Ben Nevis from Glasgow?
- Ben Nevis is about 165km from Glasgow by road on the A82, past Loch Lomond, Crianlarich and Glencoe. Scottish Citylink coaches run from Buchanan Bus Station to Fort William, and the West Highland Line runs there from Queen Street. Most Glasgow-based hillwalkers treat Ben Nevis as an overnight trip.
- What are the best easy day walks from Glasgow?
- Conic Hill at Balmaha gives exceptional Loch Lomond views with modest effort. The Whangie in the Kilpatrick Hills is a popular short rock-feature walk. The Campsie Fells, just north of the city, offer good ridge walking with wide views. All are suitable for regular walkers without Munro experience.
