Dollar Law

Dollar Law lords it over the head of the Manor Valley south of Peebles, a great green shoulder of grass with a white-painted trig pillar set into the moss. It is the high point of an outstanding ridge that loops round to Cramalt Craig and Broad Law.

Walkers usually start from the road end at Glenrath in Manor Valley, climbing the steep nose of Black Rig before easing out onto the broad upper plateau. The traverse over to Pykestone Hill and back via Posso makes a satisfying horseshoe.

Terrain

Cropped sheep-grass turf on the high ground, broken only by occasional peat groughs. Lower farm tracks are firm; the open hill is faintly pathed where the through-walkers have trodden the line of the march wall.

In winter

The Manor watershed catches every easterly off the North Sea — windburn and frozen drizzle on the face are the usual problems rather than deep snow. In bright frost the going is firm and quick; in cloud the rounded summit gives no clues.
