Midge defence
Scottish midge survival kit
The Scottish midge — Culicoides impunctatus — turns May to September outings into a tactical problem. This is the kit.
The Scottish midge is the single most-cursed feature of the Scottish outdoors. From late May to early September, in calm humid conditions, they emerge in numbers that can shut down a campsite, a barbeque, or a summit lunch. This kit list is the layered defence that works.
No single item is enough. Repellent gets you some way; head net gets you further; wind, smoke and synthetic clothing complete the package. Above all: pick wind-exposed campsites and start your day before the midges do.
Essential4 items
Smidge insect repellent
£8-£12Saltidin-based, DEET-free, the consensus repellent for Scottish midges. Effective for 8 hours.
Scotland note: Apply liberally to neck, wrists, ankles, and ears. Reapply after sweating.
Head net
£5-£15When midge density is high, repellent alone fails. A head net is decisive. Lifesystems or Trekmates do the job for under £10.
Long-sleeve thin top
£25-£50Midges land and bite through thin clothing too — but a long sleeve dramatically reduces surface area. Light-coloured synthetic is best (midges target dark colours).
Light-coloured long trousers
£35-£70Same logic as the long sleeve. Light synthetic that you can wear with shorts liner in warm weather is ideal.

Avon Skin So Soft Dry Oil
£5-£10The locals' choice. Less effective per molecule than Smidge but cheaper and pleasant to wear. Many people apply Avon as a base and Smidge for active periods.
Antihistamine cream (post-bite)
£4-£8Anthisan or generic equivalent stops the itch. Apply within a few hours of biting.
Optional3 items
Midge jacket / hood
£20-£40Full-mesh midge jacket — overkill for most situations, decisive for severe midge environments (Knoydart, Glen Affric in July).
Electric fan (around-camp)
£15-£30Midges can't fly in wind over 7mph. A small USB-powered fan at your camp chair / picnic table creates a midge-free zone.
Scotland note: Sounds absurd, works decisively. Highland B&Bs and pubs increasingly use them on outdoor seating.
Citronella candles / coil
£5-£15For around-camp deterrence. Less effective than mechanical wind but contributes to the layered defence.
