Trail running

Scottish trail-running kit list

Scotland has some of the best running terrain in Europe — and the most demanding weather. Here's the kit.

Reviewed 2026-05-27£200-£500 starter spend14 items

Trail running in Scotland is run-walk-scramble in changing conditions, often with no easy bail-out. Skyrace-style races (Glen Coe, Ben Nevis Race, Skyline Scotland) sit at the technical end; the West Highland Way Race and the Cape Wrath Ultra are at the endurance end. Both ends share a kit philosophy: light, but kit-compliant for mandatory race lists.

This list is calibrated for a 2-6 hour Scottish trail run with the realistic chance of weather changing significantly. For races, check the specific kit list and stick to it.

Essential12 items

Soft flasks (2 x 500ml)

£30 for the pair

Pair of soft flasks in the vest front; refill from burns mid-run with treatment.

Running tights or shorts

£40-£80

Lycra running tights for cold; lined shorts for warm. Avoid cotton.

Buff / running cap

£12-£25

Multi-use: warmth, sun cover, wipe sweat. A Buff in winter, a peaked cap in summer.

Energy gels / bars

£2-£4 per gel

60-90g carb per hour for runs over 90 minutes. SiS, Maurten, Tailwind. Practise with them in training.

Head torch (lightweight)

£30-£100

Petzl Bindi or Black Diamond Sprinter are 35-65g and adequate for emergency. For night running, a proper 400+ lumen head torch (Petzl Iko Core, Silva Trail Runner).

Phone in waterproof case

£10

Lifeline. Mobile signal is patchy on Scottish hills; carrying the phone is still essential. A small dry bag works.

Foil emergency blanket

£3

Race mandatory kit and good sense. 60g of insurance against an injury and a long wait.

Whistle

£3

Six blasts per minute is the international distress signal. Cheaper than a transceiver and works.

Recommended1 item

Lightweight gloves

£15-£30

A pair of merino or Polartec liner gloves weighs 30g and saves a freezing summit.

Optional1 item

Calf sleeves / compression socks

£20-£35

Compression sleeves help on long descents (recovery and proprioception). Some swear by them, some don't notice. Try them in training.

Common questions

Do I need different shoes for mud vs rock?
For 90% of Scottish trail running, aggressive lugs (Salomon Speedcross, Inov-8 Mudclaw) cover both. For Skyrace-style technical rock (Glen Coe, Skyline), look at Inov-8 X-Talon or similar grippy-on-rock options.
Should I carry waterproof trousers running?
For mandatory race kit on Mountain Marathon and OMM events, yes — usually OMM Kamleika overtrousers. For training runs, optional unless serious weather is forecast.
