Walks Near Helensburgh

25 hills within 25km — 2 Munros, 5 Corbetts, 18 Grahams, . Sorted by straight-line distance.

Helensburgh is where the Clyde commuter belt ends and the Luss Hills begin — Ben Bowie rises directly behind the town's Victorian terraces, and the wider Argyll Forest Park grahams spread north towards Loch Long and Loch Lomond. It is a smaller-scale, closer-in version of what Glasgow offers further round the coast: a proper hill day is genuinely possible without a long drive.

ScotRail serves Helensburgh Central (Argyll line, Glasgow Queen Street) and Helensburgh Upper (West Highland Line), both under 40 minutes from the city. Ben Bowie's layby start is a 10-minute drive or a longer walk north of the town; the Luss Hills' Glen Fruin and Glen Douglas trailheads for Beinn Chaorach and Doune Hill are 20–25 minutes further by car. No bus reaches the higher glens, so the hills beyond Ben Bowie need a car.

When to go

The Luss Hills catch weather off the Firth of Clyde and Loch Long, so conditions can turn faster than the modest heights suggest — Doune Hill's open ridge is exposed in wind at any time of year. Ben Bowie is a reliable low-level option even in poor weather, close enough to abandon quickly if it closes in. May–June and September give the best combination of clear views to Loch Lomond and the Arrochar Alps and fewer midges than high summer, when the sheltered glens can be troublesome at dusk.

Frequently asked questions

Can I climb a hill straight from Helensburgh?
Ben Bowie is the closest genuine option — about 4km from the town centre, reachable on foot with an extra hour added to the walk, or a 10-minute drive to the layby start. The Marilyn summit gives a proper view over the Clyde estuary for relatively little effort.
What are the Luss Hills?
A compact range of grahams between Loch Lomond and Loch Long, named for the village of Luss on the loch's west shore. Doune Hill (734m) is the highest; Beinn Chaorach, Beinn Eich and half a dozen others make up a range that rewards a full day of ridge-hopping without ever reaching Munro height.
Is Helensburgh a good base without a car?
For Ben Bowie, yes — it is reachable on foot or by a short taxi ride. For the wider Luss Hills, no: Glen Fruin and Glen Douglas have no bus service, so Beinn Chaorach and Doune Hill are effectively car-only days, even though they are barely 20km from the station.
How does Helensburgh compare to Glasgow as a hill base?
It trades range for proximity. Glasgow reaches Munros like Ben Lomond and The Cobbler within an hour by train; Helensburgh has no Munros within its immediate reach but gets you onto a real hill — Ben Bowie — faster than anywhere on the Glasgow side of the estuary, with the bigger Luss grahams a short drive beyond.
