Schiehallion, Ben Lawers and Ben Vorlich are all under an hour away. Perthshire contains some of Scotland's most varied hill country — from the gentle Lomond Hills in Fife (20 min east) to the rugged Ben Lawers range with 7 Munros above 914m.

ScotRail direct from Edinburgh (1h20) and Glasgow (1h). Local Stagecoach buses serve Crieff and Dunkeld. The A9 north gives fast access to Glen Garry, Glen Shee and the Cairngorms. A car is needed for most hill access — Perth's bus connections into the glens are limited. Pitlochry (30 min north by car or train) is a good intermediate base for northern Perthshire hills.

When to go

Perth has a relatively dry and continental climate — the hills are more settled here than on the west coast. Schiehallion and Ben Lawers are good from May to October. The Ben Lawers range holds snow well into April and can have excellent conditions for experienced winter walkers. Kinnoull Hill is excellent year-round. Glen Lyon (40 min drive) is one of Scotland's most beautiful glens in October with autumn colour.
