Dornoch is better known for its cathedral and championship links than its hillwalking, and honestly the town itself has no significant summit on the doorstep — the nearest classified hill is over 20km inland. What it does have is a genuinely quiet corner of Sutherland: Beinn Tharsuinn and Carn Chuinneag see a fraction of the visitors that equivalent Munro-adjacent hills further south attract, plus one of the finest beach walks on the east coast right from the town.
Dornoch lost its own branch line in 1960; the nearest station today is Tain on the Far North Line, about 13km away across the Dornoch Firth Bridge, with a local bus completing the journey into town. Ben Wyvis's Garbat car park and the Strath Rusdale hills are 40–45 minutes by car via Tain and Alness — there is no practical public transport to either trailhead, so this is a car-based hill base rather than a rail one.

Sutherland's east coast is noticeably drier than the west — Dornoch sits in a genuine rain shadow, which makes it a sound fallback base when the western Highlands are under cloud. Ben Wyvis holds snow well into spring on its northern slopes and is a serious winter mountain when white; Beinn Tharsuinn's lower, boggier ground is better in a dry spell than after prolonged rain. The beach walk works in any season and is at its best on a cold, clear winter morning with the firth mirror-flat. Golf traffic fills the town April to October; the hills stay quiet regardless.
