Walks Near Pitlochry

39 hills within 30km — 21 Munros, 10 Corbetts, 8 Grahams, . Sorted by straight-line distance.

Pitlochry punches far above its size for walking: a Corbett rises straight from the back of the town, a National Trust battlefield gorge sits one stop up the railway line, and two Munro groups — Schiehallion and Beinn a' Ghlo — lie within a half-hour drive. Ben Vrackie's path starts at Moulin, ten minutes' walk from the shops, which makes this one of the few Scottish towns where a proper 841m hill day begins and ends at a café.

Pitlochry is on the Highland Main Line — direct ScotRail and LNER services from Edinburgh, Glasgow (via Perth) and Inverness stop in the town centre. Ben Vrackie, Craigower and the Faskally woods are walkable from the station. Killiecrankie is one train stop or a 20-minute riverside walk north. Schiehallion's Braes of Foss car park is 25 minutes west by car; the Beinn a' Ghlo hills start from Loch Moraig above Blair Atholl, 20 minutes north.

When to go

Ben Vrackie holds snow on its top into spring most years — the loch-to-summit section is a real winter slope needing care when frozen. Schiehallion in cloud is a navigation trap on the featureless summit ridge; save it for a visibility day. The Faskally and Killiecrankie woods are the fallback in poor weather and the star attraction in late October, when the Enchanted Forest event also books the town solid — reserve accommodation well ahead for autumn weekends. Midges are moderate by west-coast standards but present in the woods June–August.

Frequently asked questions

Can I climb Ben Vrackie from Pitlochry without a car?
Yes — this is the town's great asset. Walk up through Moulin village (10 minutes from the town centre) to the signed path. The full round from town is around 12km with 750m of ascent. No bus or car required at any point.
Is Schiehallion hard to climb?
In summer conditions it is one of the more straightforward Munros — a well-built path from Braes of Foss leads onto the east ridge, and the main effort is the final boulder field before the 1,083m summit. In cloud or winter it is a different proposition: the broad ridge is featureless, and compass work is genuinely needed.
What is the best short walk in Pitlochry?
Craigower, the National Trust for Scotland viewpoint hill above the golf course, gives a big Highland panorama for about an hour's effort. The Loch Dunmore and Faskally woodland loops are flatter still. For something with history, the Killiecrankie gorge combines the 1689 battlefield, the Soldier's Leap and riverside woodland.
How far are the Beinn a' Ghlo Munros from Pitlochry?
The Loch Moraig start point above Blair Atholl is roughly 15km north of Pitlochry — about 20 minutes by car. Carn Liath, the first of the three Munros, is the common single-hill day; the full traverse of all three is one of Perthshire's biggest hill days at around 22km.
