The Cairnwell

The Cairnwell (933m) is one of the easiest Munros to reach in Scotland — the A93 Cairnwell Pass at 670m sits at its very foot, leaving only a short, well-trodden ascent to the summit. The hill stands at the central point of the three-Munro Glenshee round (with Càrn Aosda and Càrn a' Gheoidh) and is dominated by the Glenshee ski-area infrastructure including chairlifts, mast and tow lines.

Park at the Glenshee Ski Centre on the A93 (Britain's highest paved road pass at 670m). Walk west under the chairlifts, then climb the broad east ridge of The Cairnwell directly via the ski-tow access track to the summit cairn — barely an hour from the car. Most parties extend the day by traversing west to Càrn a' Gheoidh and back via Càrn Aosda. The full three-Munro round runs roughly 10km with 600m of climb.

Terrain

The ski-area access is firm gravel and ski-tow track. The east ridge of The Cairnwell is broad heather and short turf with a clear path under the chairlifts. The summit area has a huge cairn at the high point with extensive ski-area infrastructure visible. The connecting path west to Càrn a' Gheoidh is broad mossy turf — easy walking but featureless.

In winter

A popular winter ticking Munro and a major ski-touring venue. The summit is fully exposed to easterly continental weather. The A93 corridor is reliably gritted and the ski-centre car park stays accessible. The Glenshee chairlift is for skiers only — not a public lift for hillwalkers. SAIS Southern Cairngorms applies.
