When to go
The Angus Glens are among the drier areas of the Highland edge — the Grampians shelter them from prevailing westerlies. This means better walking conditions than the west Highlands in settled weather. Lochnagar holds snow reliably December–March and is excellent for experienced winter mountaineers. Glen Clova is outstanding for blaeberry colour in late September. Dundee Law is walkable year-round and particularly good on clear winter days for snow-dusted Highland views.

Frequently asked questions
- What are the closest Munros to Dundee?
- Mayar (928m) and Driesh (947m) in Glen Clova are approximately 40km from Dundee — around 45 minutes by car via Kirriemuir. They are among Scotland's less-visited Munros despite good paths and relatively straightforward terrain.
- Is there a hill walk from Dundee city centre?
- Dundee Law (174m) is the city's volcanic plug — the summit is approximately 20 minutes walk from the city centre or accessible by local bus. Views extend across the Tay to the Lomond Hills in Fife and, on clear days, to the Grampians to the north.
- What is special about the Angus Glens for walking?
- The Angus Glens (Glen Clova, Glen Prosen, Glen Isla, Glen Shee) offer highland-quality walking with significantly fewer visitors than Perthshire and Lochaber. The glens are beautiful, the paths good, and the Munros (Mayar, Driesh, Mount Keen, Lochnagar) are varied in character. Weekends in the Angus Glens rarely feel crowded.
- How do I get to Glen Clova without a car?
- Glen Clova is difficult to access without a car. Stagecoach buses serve Kirriemuir (Dundee to Kirriemuir approximately 40 min). Beyond Kirriemuir into the glen (13km to Glen Doll), there is no regular bus. A taxi from Kirriemuir is the most practical option, or a bike (the glen road is flat and pleasant cycling).
