Walks Near Ballater

Ballater is Deeside's walking town: an oak-covered Marilyn rising straight from the village green, the granite dome of Lochnagar filling the southern skyline, and the Muir of Dinnet reserve — with its glacial oddity, the Burn o' Vat — ten minutes down the road. Royal patronage built the town; the hills are why walkers keep coming back to it.
The Deeside railway closed in 1966, so it's the A93 — Stagecoach buses run the Aberdeen–Ballater–Braemar corridor roughly hourly, which genuinely works for the Craigendarroch, Cambus o' May and Muir of Dinnet walks. Lochnagar's start at the Spittal of Glenmuick is 12km up a dead-end glen road with no bus; drive or cycle. The old railway line itself is now the Deeside Way, flat walking and cycling east towards Aboyne.
Top walks near Ballater
Lochnagar
The great corrie mountain of Deeside — 1,155m from the Spittal of Glenmuick, past the Meikle Pap col where the cliffs suddenly fill the view. Byron's "steep frowning glories" undersells it. Around 19km return on mostly excellent paths.
12km from Ballater
Craigendarroch
The Hill of the Oaks — a 402m Marilyn whose path leaves the village pavement and corkscrews up through ancient oakwood to a top with the whole of mid-Deeside laid out. An hour and a half, and the best effort-to-view bargain in the area.
1km from Ballater
Burn o' Vat and Muir of Dinnet
A giant granite pothole carved by glacial meltwater, reached by a burn-hopping path, with loch-circuit extensions around Loch Kinord's pines, Pictish stone and crannog sites. Flat, family-friendly and geologically strange.

When to go
Lochnagar is a genuine winter mountain — its plateau and corrie rim carry cornices and demand full winter skills for a large part of the year, and the SAIS South Cairngorms forecast covers it. Deeside's birch and oak turn gold late in October: Craigendarroch and Dinnet are the colour walks. August brings heather bloom across the moors and, around the Braemar Gathering in early September, heavy traffic on the A93. Winter walking low down stays excellent — the Deeside Way and Dinnet lochs in snow are quietly magnificent.

Frequently asked questions
- How long does Lochnagar take from Ballater?
- The Spittal of Glenmuick car park is a 20-minute drive from Ballater; the mountain round itself is about 19km and most parties take 6–8 hours. Add the drive both ways and it is a full day. The car park fills early on fine summer weekends — before 9am is wise.
- What is the best short walk in Ballater?
- Craigendarroch, directly above the village: a steep but short oakwood path to a 402m summit view over the Dee valley, done comfortably in 1.5 hours. The Seven Bridges riverside circuit from the church square is the flat alternative, and Cambus o' May's pines and suspension bridge are five minutes east.
- Is the Burn o' Vat suitable for children?
- Yes — it is one of Deeside's best family walks. The Vat itself is 400m from the visitor centre on a good path, with one easy burn crossing on stepping stones to get inside the pothole. The Loch Kinord circuit extension is flat and adds Pictish and Iron Age interest without difficulty.
- Can I walk from Ballater without a car?
- Better than most Deeside bases: Craigendarroch, the Seven Bridges circuit and the Deeside Way all start in the village, and the Aberdeen–Braemar bus stops at Cambus o' May and Dinnet for the reserve walks. Lochnagar is the exception — the Glenmuick road has no service, so it needs a car, bike legs or a taxi.
