Dumyat is the closest significant hill — a 2-hour walk from the town edge. The Highland Boundary Fault runs through the Stirling area, making it possible to stand on lowland ground with highland peaks visible in all directions.
ScotRail direct from Edinburgh (50 min) and Glasgow (30 min) — excellent rail access. Local bus to Bridge of Allan and Blairlogie for Ochils access. For Trossachs hills, a car is needed — the A84 north gives access to Callander (20 min) and the Trossachs proper. The A9 north connects to Perthshire hills in 30–40 minutes.

When to go
Stirling benefits from a relatively sheltered position — the Ochil Hills catch westerly rainfall before it reaches the town. Walking on the Ochils is good year-round, including winter days when the ridge is snow-covered and views extend across the frozen Forth valley. The Trossachs and first Munros are at their best May–October. Spring (April–May) can give exceptional clear days with snow on the Highland hills visible from the Ochil ridge.
