Beinn Stacach (Ceann na Baintighearna] [Stob Fear-tomhais] [Beinn Stacath)

Beinn Stacach — also Stob Fear-tomhais on modern maps, and Ceann na Baintighearna or Beinn Stacath in older usage — is a 771m Corbett in the Trossachs north of Loch Voil, on the watershed between Balquhidder and Glen Buckie. The summit is a trig point on a wide grass dome. A 364m prominence puts it well clear of any near neighbour, and the hill offers a quiet alternative to the busier Trossachs Munros nearby — Ben More and Stob Binnein dominate the western horizon, with Ben Lawers across to the north.

Standard route

loch-side path 20% · heather hillside 45% · grassy ridge 25% · summit area 10%

14km · 632m ascent · 3.9 hrs

Start from Inverlochlarig at the road end above Loch Voil and follow the public hill track north-east up Glen Carnaig. After about 3km, climb open grass slopes east onto the broad south ridge of Beinn Stacach. The ridge gives a gentle pull to the summit trig. Around 14km return with 632m of ascent. Often combined with neighbouring Ben Vorlich for a Trossachs / Balquhidder double, though that adds a Munro.

Terrain

The Glen Carnaig hill track is firm gravel. Past the track the slopes are open grass with occasional damp ground — easy walking but pathless. The summit area is broad short turf with the trig pillar unmistakable. No exposure or scrambling. The Inverlochlarig estate is working hill ground; watch for stalking signs in season.

In winter

A friendly winter Corbett — gentle gradients, no avalanche concerns, and a manageable distance from a road end that is generally accessible. The Loch Voil road past Balquhidder is single-track and rarely gritted; check conditions. The summit dome catches westerly snowfall.

This hill is in the Lochaber SAIS forecast area. Check SAIS forecasts in winter (December–April).
