Beinn Tulaichean

Beinn Tulaichean (946m) — "hill of the hillocks" — is a Crianlarich Munro sitting just south of Cruach Àrdrain, accessed from the southern side at Inverlochlarig at the head of Loch Voil. The two hills are linked by a high broad ridge and almost always climbed together on a Trossachs / Crianlarich round. Beinn Tulaichean itself is the lower companion, with a small rocky cairn perched on a flat top.

Standard route

Glen track 35% · Open hillside 40% · Summit ridge 25%

16km · 832m ascent · 4.6 hrs

Park at Inverlochlarig at the road end west of Balquhidder. Take the rough farm track up Gleann an Dubh-choire, then climb the steep south-east ridge of Beinn Tulaichean directly. From the summit traverse north along the broad connecting ridge to Cruach Àrdrain, then return reverse-traverse. The pair total roughly 13km return with 1100m of climb.

Terrain

The Inverlochlarig farm track is firm farm surface but the ground onto the south-east ridge is wet boggy moor. Higher up the south-east ridge the going turns to broken mica-schist with a faint braided path. The Beinn Tulaichean summit holds a small cairn on a rocky outcrop. The link north to Cruach Àrdrain follows broad mossy turf across a gentle bealach.

In winter

A reasonably benign Crianlarich winter Munro pair. The connecting ridge between Beinn Tulaichean and Cruach Àrdrain accumulates wind-blown snow but offers few avalanche-prone slopes. Cornicing on the east side of the connecting ridge is consistent. The Inverlochlarig road can be drifted; the A84 corridor at Balquhidder stays gritted. SAIS Southern Cairngorms is the nearest formal forecast.
