Wild Swimming

Falls of Falloch

The Falls of Falloch tumble 30m into a natural rock pool on the River Falloch — the most accessible roadside waterfall swim on the West Highland Way corridor. The path from the A82 lay-by takes 10 minutes through woodland. The plunge pool is best in moderate low water — spectacular but swimmable. A popular spot on summer weekends; arrive early or late for a quieter experience.

  • strong current below falls
  • slippery rock approach
  • high water after rain makes swimming dangerous

Getting there

Lay-by on the A82, 3km north of Inverarnan (G83 7DX). Waymarked path from the lay-by to the falls (10-min walk). West Highland Way walkers frequently detour here. SOAC rights apply.

Parking postcode: G83 7DX

Safety

The force of the main falls can pin swimmers against rocks at any flow level — swim in the pool area only, not directly under the falls. After rain the current in the pool tail increases significantly. Very slippery rock.

Best for

Common questions

Is the Falls of Falloch swim safe?
In low water conditions, yes. Check the A82 lay-by on the drive up — if the river looks brown and fast, save the swim for another day. The plunge pool is calm in settled weather.
