Aberdeen has excellent access to the eastern Cairngorms — Lochnagar, Beinn a' Bhuird, Ben Avon and the Deeside hills are all within an hour and a half. The Don Valley hills and the Angus Glens round out a strong day-walk portfolio. The Hill of Fare and Brimmond Hill give urban hill walking within 20 minutes of the city. Aberdeen's position on the east coast means the eastern Cairngorms are uniquely accessible here — hills that see fewer visitors than those approached from Aviemore.
ScotRail from Edinburgh (2h30) and Inverness (2h). The A93 Deeside road south-west gives access to Lochnagar trailheads (1h to Glen Muick). The A939 over the Lecht connects to Tomintoul and Cairngorm approaches from the north. Most walks require a car — Deeside is served by bus to Ballater but trailheads beyond Ballater need a car. Aberdeen Airport connects to London and European cities.

When to go
Aberdeen has Scotland's driest and sunniest east coast climate — more settled weather than the west Highlands. The eastern Cairngorms benefit from this: Lochnagar and the Deeside hills get more clear-sky days than their westerly counterparts. Summer (June–August) is the most popular period. Winter in the eastern Cairngorms can be excellent for experienced mountaineers — Lochnagar's corrie holds reliable snow and ice for winter climbing. The A93 Deeside road is well-maintained year-round.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the most popular walk from Aberdeen?
- Lochnagar (1,155m) via Glen Muick is Aberdeen's most popular mountain day — the A93 Deeside road makes it accessible in 1h from the city. The path from the Spittal of Glenmuick car park is well-maintained (9km to the summit, 790m ascent). Allow 5–7 hours return.
- Can I reach Deeside hills from Aberdeen without a car?
- Yes — Stagecoach Bluebird 201/202 serves the Deeside villages to Ballater (1h30 from Aberdeen). From Ballater, Glen Muick (Lochnagar trailhead) is a further 13km with no bus service. A taxi from Ballater is the most practical option. The Ballater area has good shorter walks accessible without further transport.
- What is the best Munro for a first-timer near Aberdeen?
- Lochnagar has an excellent maintained path but the 790m of ascent and 18km return make it a demanding first Munro. Mount Keen (939m, 16km return from Glen Mark) is more approachable in terms of gradient. Morven (872m, Deeside) and Bennachie (528m Mither Tap, near Inverurie) are good easier options for those building up.
- How far are the Cairngorms from Aberdeen?
- The Cairngorm ski car park is approximately 105km from Aberdeen via the A93 to Braemar and A939 to Tomintoul, then south via the B9008 — around 2h. Alternatively, the A9 via Aviemore is longer but a faster road. The eastern Cairngorm hills (Beinn a' Bhuird, Ben Avon) are accessible via Deeside in around 1h30.
