Walks Near Largs

20 hills within 40km — 5 Corbetts, 15 Grahams, . Sorted by straight-line distance.

Largs is best known as a ferry town — the short crossing to Great Cumbrae leaves from the pier — but the hills above it belong to a different, wilder story: the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park rises straight from the seafront, and the Renfrewshire Heights and Cowal grahams spread out behind. Arran's granite skyline is visible from the prom on a clear day, a reminder of how much serious ground sits within an hour of the ice-cream stands.

ScotRail runs direct from Glasgow Central to Largs in about an hour. CalMac's Cumbrae ferry leaves from the same seafront for the ten-minute crossing to Millport. Kelburn Country Park and its glen walks are a 10-minute walk south of the station; Clyde Muirshiel's Cornalees Bridge car park for Hill of Stake is a 20-minute drive north via Skelmorlie and Inverkip. Arran's ferry departs from Ardrossan, a 20-minute drive or a short train hop south along the coast.

When to go

The Clyde coast's hills are wetter and windier than their modest heights suggest — the Renfrewshire Heights catch the same Atlantic weather as the Cowal peninsula opposite, so a fine forecast for Largs itself doesn't always hold on Hill of Stake. Kelburn Glen is a reliable any-season walk, particularly good after rain when the falls are running. Ferry sailings to Cumbrae and from nearby Ardrossan to Arran can be disrupted by winter gales — check CalMac status before building a day around one. May and September give the clearest cross-Clyde views to Arran's ridge.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best short walk right in Largs?
Kelburn Glen, inside Kelburn Country Park a short walk from the seafront — a gorge path past waterfalls and old estate woodland, with the castle and its painted murals as an added curiosity. It works in any weather and takes an hour or two depending how far up the glen you go.
Can I see Arran's hills from Largs?
Yes — Goat Fell and the Arran ridge are clearly visible across the Firth of Clyde on a clear day, though reaching them means driving to Ardrossan (20 minutes) for the CalMac ferry to Brodick, not sailing direct from Largs itself. The Largs ferry goes to Great Cumbrae instead.
Is Hill of Stake a good walk for beginners?
Not really — the Greenock Cut approach is easy and scenic, but the final push to the trig crosses genuinely pathless peat and bog that catches out underprepared walkers, especially in poor visibility. It suits regular hillwalkers comfortable navigating rough, featureless ground rather than a first hill day.
How do I get to Largs without a car?
ScotRail runs direct trains from Glasgow Central in about an hour, arriving close to both the seafront and Kelburn Country Park. The Cumbrae ferry leaves from the same pier. For Hill of Stake or Cruach nan Capull, however, there is no useful bus to the trailheads — those need a car.
