Walks Near Dunkeld

10 hills within 25km — 4 Corbetts, 6 Grahams, . Sorted by straight-line distance.

Dunkeld does big-tree walking better than anywhere in Scotland — the Hermitage's Douglas firs are among Britain's tallest, Birnam Hill carries Macbeth's wood in its name, and osprey-patrolled Loch of the Lowes sits just over the ridge. None of it is high ground by Highland standards, and that is the point: this is the base for river, gorge and forest days with one honest little summit thrown in.

Dunkeld & Birnam station is on the Highland Main Line — direct trains from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness — and everything here works on foot from the platform: Birnam Hill's path starts 400m from the station, the Hermitage is 2km along signed woodland paths, and the Telford bridge into Dunkeld itself is a ten-minute walk. No car needed for any core walk.

When to go

October is Dunkeld's month — the "Big Tree Country" larch and beech colour peaks, salmon leap at the Black Linn after rain, and the Hermitage car park overflows at weekends; the train removes that problem entirely. Ospreys occupy Loch of the Lowes from late March to August, with the hides at their best early morning. Birnam Hill is a fine short winter hill — low enough to stay walkable when the Highlands proper are storm-bound, high enough for a snow-dusted summit. The gorge paths hold ice in hard frost.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do these walks from the train?
Entirely — Dunkeld is arguably Scotland's best rail-walking base. Birnam Hill starts 400m from Dunkeld & Birnam station, the Hermitage is a 2km signed woodland walk away, and Dunkeld town, the cathedral and the Lowes reserve are all connected by paths. A day return from Edinburgh or Glasgow covers any of them comfortably.
How hard is Birnam Hill?
Short but honest — around 6km for the circuit with 350m of ascent, much of it on steep wooden-step sections through the woods. The top is open heather with a big view for the effort. Most regular walkers take 2.5–3 hours; it is a good first "real" hill for children who have done country parks.
When can I see the ospreys at Loch of the Lowes?
The Scottish Wildlife Trust hides overlook a nest occupied from late March or early April until August, with chicks fledging mid-late summer. Early mornings give the most activity and the least company. The reserve is a 3km walk or short drive from Dunkeld; check opening arrangements before an off-season visit.
Is the Hermitage worth it if it's busy?
Yes — and there's an easy fix. The honeypot is the 400m stretch from the car park to Ossian's Hall; continue up the Braan towards Rumbling Bridge and the crowds thin within minutes while the gorge scenery, if anything, improves. Arriving by the woodland path from Birnam rather than the car park does the same trick in reverse.
