Meall Greigh

Meall Greigh (1001m) — "hill of the horse-studs" — sits at the eastern end of the Ben Lawers chain on the north side of Loch Tay. It is the most rounded and least dramatic of the seven Lawers Munros, a broad whaleback summit overlooking Lawers village. Usually paired with Meall Garbh on a long Lawers traverse, or climbed as a quieter standalone day from the lochside village.

Standard route

Good path 45% · Open hillside 35% · Summit 20%

17km · 881m ascent · 4.9 hrs

Park near the church at Lawers village on the A827. Take the stalkers' path north up the Lawers Burn, then climb west onto Meall Greigh's broad east shoulder and the summit cairn. Most parties continue west to Meall Garbh (Lawers) via the broad bealach, then return down the Lawers Burn. Around 13km with 1000m of ascent for the pair; Meall Greigh alone is 9km with 750m up.

Terrain

The Lawers Burn stalkers' path is excellent restored pitching for the lower section. Above 600m the path fades and the ground turns to rough grass and heather. The summit area of Meall Greigh is broad mossy turf — easy walking but featureless in cloud. The connecting bealach to Meall Garbh is broad and grassy. The descent line down the Lawers Burn is the same as the ascent.

In winter

A relatively benign winter Munro by Ben Lawers standards. The broad summit collects deep drift but rarely produces avalanche-prone slopes. Cornices persist along the northern and eastern lip of the summit ridge through the winter. The Lawers Burn line stays sheltered from westerly weather and offers a sensible retreat option. The A827 corridor is reliably gritted. SAIS Southern Cairngorms is the closest formal report.
