Meall Glas

Meall Glas (959m) — "grey-green hill" — is the western Munro of the pair above Glen Dochart, partnered with Sgiath Chuil to the east. Both are broad, rounded grassy summits — characteristic Breadalbane country with extensive views east to Schiehallion and west to Cruach Ardrain. The two are usually climbed together as a horseshoe round from the Glen Dochart side, though access via Kenknock in Glen Lochay is the more popular northern approach.

Park at the small lay-by at Auchessan on the A85 in Glen Dochart. Walk north up the rough farm track and climb the long broad south ridge of Meall Glas directly to the summit. From the summit traverse east along the broad connecting ridge over Beinn Cheathaich to Sgiath Chuil. Descend the south-east ridge of Sgiath Chuil back into Glen Dochart. The pair total roughly 14km with 1100m of climb.

Terrain

The Auchessan farm track is firm, but the climb onto the south ridge crosses wet boggy moor with no clear path. Higher up the ridge becomes broad grass and heather. Meall Glas' summit forms a broad mossy dome with a small cairn perched on a rocky outcrop. The link across to Sgiath Chuil is broad turf with one short steep section. The descent off Sgiath Chuil is rough heather hillside.

In winter

A reasonably benign Breadalbane winter pair. Broad open summits collect wind-blown snow but rarely produce avalanche-prone slopes. The Glen Dochart approach stays accessible. The A85 corridor at Auchessan is reliably gritted.

Outside the SAIS network. No Scottish Avalanche Information Service forecast covers Meall Glas. SAIS forecasts six areas only — Northern and Southern Cairngorms, Creag Meagaidh, Lochaber, Glencoe and Torridon — and this hill is outside all of them, so there is no avalanche forecast to read for it. In winter, use MWIS Southeastern Highlands ↗ for mountain weather, judge snow stability from first principles, and treat any cornice or wind-loaded slope with extra caution.
