About the weather here
Conic Hill (361m) is the small hill above Balmaha on the east shore of Loch Lomond, climbed in an hour or two from the Balmaha car park on a path shared with the West Highland Way. It sits right on the Highland Boundary Fault — the line of islands across the loch continues the same ridge — and its view of the loch is the reason it is one of the busiest hills in Scotland. Low as it is, it is a bare ridge above open water.
What to expect
Conic Hill is low enough to escape the worst of the mountain weather but exposed enough to get wind straight off the loch. The upper ridge is bare, and a south-westerly comes up the loch with nothing in the way. Rain on Loch Lomond is frequent and the path — steps and eroded ground — is slippery when wet. Cloud rarely covers the summit, so the usual disappointment is haze rather than mist.
Wind exposure
Moderate, but the ridge is fully open. On the summit and the crest just below it there is no shelter, and the wind off the loch is colder than the air temperature at the car park suggests. Not dangerous on a normal day; unpleasant on a stormy one.
Winter conditions
Conic Hill rarely holds snow for long, but the steep path sections ice after frost and the summit ridge can be treacherous under a thin, hard cover. It is a good winter half-day when higher hills are out of the question. No avalanche forecast applies here and there is no avalanche terrain; the winter hazards are ice on the steps and wind chill on the ridge.

- Is Conic Hill windy?
- The summit ridge is open to the loch and takes any south-westerly head-on. It is a short, low hill, but the top can be surprisingly cold and blustery compared with Balmaha.
- Can I climb Conic Hill in the rain?
- You can — it is a short walk on a good path — but the steps and eroded sections are slippery when wet and the view, which is the whole point, disappears in low cloud and rain. Save it for a clearer window if you can.
- Does Conic Hill get snow?
- Occasionally and briefly. Ice on the path after a frost is the more common winter issue; microspikes are worthwhile on cold mornings.
