Ben Vorlich (985m) is the Munro above Loch Earn, climbed from Ardvorlich by a straightforward path up the north ridge, usually with its neighbour Stuc a' Chroin. There are two Munros called Ben Vorlich; this page is the Loch Earn one at grid reference NN629189. What to expect
Ben Vorlich is on the southern edge of the Highlands and takes weather off the Forth valley to the south as well as off the west. The north ridge path is gentle and well made, which lulls people; the summit is a narrow crest with steep ground to the south, and the bealach to Stuc a' Chroin is a wind funnel. Cloud on the summit while Lochearnhead is clear is normal.
Wind exposure
High on the summit ridge and the bealach towards Stuc a' Chroin. The north ridge itself is open but broad; the narrow summit crest is where a strong wind becomes a problem, particularly for anyone continuing to Stuc a' Chroin, whose scramble is not the place to be in a gale.
Winter conditions
The north ridge is a straightforward winter ascent on a settled day and a good introduction to winter Munros, but the summit crest ices and the continuation to Stuc a' Chroin is a proper winter mountaineering route with a steep, often corniced bealach. No avalanche forecast covers these hills; the steep south-facing slopes off the summit hold snow into spring and should be assessed yourself.
