Ben Chonzie (930m) is the rounded Munro between Comrie and Crieff, climbed from Glen Lednock on a track and path that make it one of the easiest Munros in Scotland. Its reputation is for mountain hares and for being a first Munro. Its weather reputation is for a broad, featureless summit plateau where the fence line is the only navigational aid in cloud.
What to expect
Ben Chonzie is a big, gentle dome on the southern edge of the Highlands and gets cloud on its top for a large part of the year. It is not a dramatic hill, so the mistake people make is treating it as a walk in the park: the plateau is high and open, the wind on it is real, and in mist the flatness is the hazard. Rain is frequent but the hill is slightly drier than the western Munros.
Wind exposure
Moderate to high. The Glen Lednock track is sheltered until the final climb, and then the plateau is open in all directions. There are no crags to worry about, but no shelter either — a strong westerly on the summit plateau is cold and tiring.
Winter conditions
Ben Chonzie is a popular first winter Munro because there is nothing steep on the normal route, but the plateau drifts heavily and the fence posts disappear under snow, which removes the one handrail the hill offers. Whiteout on a featureless plateau is disorienting even on a low hill. No avalanche forecast covers Ben Chonzie; the winter risk here is navigation and cold, not slopes.

- It has no dangerous ground, which is why it is often chosen when the forecast is poor. But the summit plateau is featureless, and in cloud it is easy to wander. Follow the fence line and take a compass bearing to the cairn.

- Yes, and it drifts across the plateau in winter. The route stays gentle, but the drifts hide the fence posts and the path. Crampons are rarely needed; navigation skills always are.
