About the weather here
Ben Lui (1,131m) is the finest-looking mountain in the southern Highlands, a twin-topped peak with a great north-east corrie, Coire Gaothach, that holds snow into early summer. The classic approach is the long walk in from Dalrigh near Tyndrum along Glen Cononish; the shorter route is from Glen Lochy through the forest. The summit ridge is narrow and the corrie rim is corniced for much of the winter.
What to expect
Ben Lui is high enough and far enough west to get heavy rain and long-lasting snow. The corrie faces north-east and shelters from the prevailing wind, which is why it holds snow so late and why the corrie rim builds cornices. The summit ridge is exposed to the west, and cloud sits on the twin tops for a large part of the year. Glen Cononish gives a sheltered walk in and a long, cold walk out.
Wind exposure
High on the summit ridge and the corrie rim. The rim is the normal route to the summit from Coire Gaothach and is exposed to the west, with the corrie drop on the east side; gusts along it are a hazard. The glen approaches are sheltered.
Winter conditions
Ben Lui is a classic winter mountain, and Coire Gaothach a classic winter route — it is also avalanche terrain, with a steep headwall and large cornices on the rim above it. The summit ridge holds hard snow into spring. Ice axe, crampons and the ability to assess snow are essential; no avalanche forecast covers Ben Lui, so that assessment is yours.

- Coire Gaothach faces north-east, away from the sun and the prevailing wind, and collects the snow the westerlies blow over the ridge. The corrie often holds snow into June.
- Is there an avalanche forecast for Ben Lui?
- No. Ben Lui lies outside the SAIS forecast areas. Coire Gaothach is avalanche terrain in winter and the rim carries cornices; assess conditions yourself and read the mountain weather forecast for recent snowfall and wind direction.
- How exposed is the Ben Lui summit ridge?
- It is narrow, with the corrie on one side, and open to the west. In strong wind the rim walk from the top of the corrie to the summit is the part of the day to think hard about.
