About the weather here
Tinto (712m) is the big rounded hill above the Clyde valley near Biggar, climbed from the Fallburn car park by a broad path to an enormous summit cairn. It is one of the most-walked hills in southern Scotland because it is easy, close to Glasgow and Edinburgh, and has views from the Highlands to the Lake District on a clear day. It is also a standalone hill in open country, and the wind treats it accordingly.
What to expect
Tinto stands alone above the Clyde valley with nothing to shelter it, so it takes the wind from every direction. The path is broad and easy but entirely open from the car park to the summit; a westerly that is a breeze in Biggar is a hard walk on the upper slopes. The hill is often clear when the Highlands are in cloud, which is its great virtue in winter, but its summit sits in its own cloud on humid days.
Wind exposure
High for its height. There is no shelter anywhere on the normal route, and the summit cairn is the only windbreak on the hill. The final slope to the top steepens into the wind on a westerly. Families and dog walkers make up a lot of the traffic here and are the ones most often caught out.
Winter conditions
Tinto holds snow briefly but ices well: the upper path becomes a sheet on hard-frost mornings and the summit plateau drifts. It is a good winter hill for a short day when the Highlands are unpleasant, but the exposure means a cold day here feels far colder than the air temperature. No avalanche forecast covers Tinto and none is needed; the hazard is ice and wind chill, not snow slopes.

Frequently asked questions
- Is Tinto windy?
- Yes — it is an isolated hill above open farmland and nothing shelters it. The summit and the upper path take the full force of any westerly. It is easy walking, which is why people arrive underdressed for the wind on top.
- Does Tinto get snow?
- It does, though not for long. What lasts is ice on the upper path after a hard frost and drifted snow on the summit plateau. Microspikes make a winter ascent much more pleasant.
- Is Tinto a good bad-weather alternative to the Highlands?
- Often. It is frequently clear when the Munros are in cloud, and it is a short day. But check the wind: a gale on Tinto is still a gale, and there is nowhere to get out of it.
