Galloway & the Southern Uplands Midges in September — Risk, Peak Times, Kit
Background pressure only. Head net optional. The driest, breeziest, most under-rated low-midge zone in Scotland. The Galloway hills, the Merrick range and the Solway coast have a fraction of the pressure of the West Highlands even in July. A genuine peak-season refuge.
Current risk
Galloway & the Southern Uplands in September: Low. Background pressure only. Head net optional.
When they bite
Peak biting windows are dawn 6–8am and dusk 6–9pm. Air cooling fast. Drier southern climate brings the season to a close marginally earlier than the rest of mainland Scotland. Population dropping rapidly through the month.
What to wear
- Smidge repellent (75ml)
- Light-coloured long-sleeve baselayer — midges have a strong preference for dark clothing.
Tactical notes
September is the prize month for Galloway — and Galloway's September is one of the earliest fade-outs anywhere in mainland Scotland. The drier southern climate, the granite bedrock and the rolling open hill country combine to wind down the midge season faster than in the Highlands. The first week typically still has summer-tier pressure in the Galloway Forest interior; the second week sees pressure drop sharply; by the third week the Galloway trips are essentially back to a clean midge baseline; by the last week the season is effectively over.
This is the prime window for the long [Southern Upland Way](/long-distance/southern-upland-way) attempt across the Galloway sections. The full 341km coast-to-coast walk from Portpatrick to Cockburnspath takes about three weeks; a September start gives bracken colour through Galloway Forest Park, dry firm ground, manageable daylight (still 12+ hours mid-month), and a midge population already in steep decline. The [Mull of Galloway Trail](/long-distance/mull-of-galloway-trail), [Cross Borders Drove Road](/long-distance/cross-borders-drove-road) and the Annandale Way all give clean September LDP options.
For hill days the Awful Hand range, the Rhinns of Kells, the Dungeon Hills and the satellite Donalds — [Carlin's Cairn](/hillwalking/donalds/carlins-cairn), [Meikle Millyea](/hillwalking/donalds/meikle-millyea), [Milldown](/hillwalking/donalds/milldown), [Kirriereoch Hill](/hillwalking/donalds/kirriereoch-hill) — are at their best of the year. The [Merrick](/hillwalking/corbetts/merrick) via Bruce's Stone from Loch Trool with September bracken colour is one of the most under-rated mountain days in Britain. [Corserine](/hillwalking/corbetts/corserine), [Cairnsmore of Carsphairn](/hillwalking/corbetts/cairnsmore-of-carsphairn), [Shalloch on Minnoch](/hillwalking/corbetts/shalloch-on-minnoch) all give clean Corbett days. [Lamachan Hill](/hillwalking/grahams/lamachan-hill), [Cairnsmore of Fleet](/hillwalking/grahams/cairnsmore-of-fleet), [Mullwharchar](/hillwalking/grahams/mullwharchar) and [Craignaw](/hillwalking/grahams/craignaw) give Graham-day options. The 7stanes trail centres at [Kirroughtree](/mountain-biking/trail-centres/kirroughtree) and [Glentrool](/mountain-biking/trail-centres/glentrool) are at peak September condition. The Dark Sky Park observation season ramps up as nights lengthen. If you only get one Galloway trip a year, target September.
