Tactical notes
October in Galloway is post-midge-season and the visual peak of the regional year. The midge population has dropped below detection across the entire region from the Solway coast to the Awful Hand summit. The drier southern climate brings the season to its earliest close anywhere in mainland Scotland. The bracken colour through Galloway Forest Park, the autumn birch on the [Glen Trool](/glens/glen-trool) flanks, the larch turning gold across the Mabie Forest and Kirroughtree, and the Solway coast in October Atlantic storm light — all at their annual best.
This is one of the absolute best months for the long Galloway hill rounds. The Awful Hand traverse — [Merrick](/hillwalking/corbetts/merrick), [Kirriereoch Hill](/hillwalking/donalds/kirriereoch-hill), Tarfessock, [Shalloch on Minnoch](/hillwalking/corbetts/shalloch-on-minnoch) — with October bracken colour and the long open ridge views is one of the finest autumn days available in Britain. The Rhinns of Kells with [Corserine](/hillwalking/corbetts/corserine), [Carlin's Cairn](/hillwalking/donalds/carlins-cairn), [Meikle Millyea](/hillwalking/donalds/meikle-millyea) and [Milldown](/hillwalking/donalds/milldown) gives a long Donald round in peak conditions. The Dungeon Hills round from [Back Hill of Bush bothy](/bothies/back-hill-of-bush) — [Mullwharchar](/hillwalking/grahams/mullwharchar), [Craignaw](/hillwalking/grahams/craignaw), Dungeon Hill — is at its most atmospheric.
For short days, [Cairnsmore of Fleet](/hillwalking/grahams/cairnsmore-of-fleet) from Newton Stewart, [Lamachan Hill](/hillwalking/grahams/lamachan-hill) and [Millfore](/hillwalking/grahams/millfore) from Glen Trool, [Cairnsmore of Carsphairn](/hillwalking/corbetts/cairnsmore-of-carsphairn) as a solo isolated Corbett — all give clean October half-days. The 7stanes trail centres — [Kirroughtree](/mountain-biking/trail-centres/kirroughtree), [Glentrool](/mountain-biking/trail-centres/glentrool), [Dalbeattie](/mountain-biking/trail-centres/dalbeattie), [Mabie](/mountain-biking/trail-centres/mabie), [Ae Forest](/mountain-biking/trail-centres/ae-forest) — are at peak autumn riding condition. The Galloway Forest Park Dark Sky Park observation is at its early-darkness annual peak with the longest dark hours combined with stable autumn air.
