Galloway & the Southern Uplands Midges in February — Risk, Peak Times, Kit
Effectively no midges. Plan freely. The driest, breeziest, most under-rated low-midge zone in Scotland. The Galloway hills, the Merrick range and the Solway coast have a fraction of the pressure of the West Highlands even in July. A genuine peak-season refuge.

Tactical notes
February is the best chance of proper winter conditions on the Galloway Hills. The Awful Hand and the Rhinns of Kells, despite being well south of the Highland line, regularly get full winter cover above about 600m in February. The [Galloway Forest Park](/regions/galloway) granite landscape — bare rock, lochans, isolated peaks — takes on a quasi-Highland character that catches visitors expecting gentle Border hills. The midge population remains entirely dormant.
The [Merrick](/hillwalking/corbetts/merrick) via the Bruce's Stone path from Loch Trool is one of the most accessible serious winter days in southern Scotland — short approach, well-graded path, summit views from the Lake District to Arran. The full Awful Hand traverse — [Merrick](/hillwalking/corbetts/merrick), [Kirriereoch Hill](/hillwalking/donalds/kirriereoch-hill), Tarfessock, [Shalloch on Minnoch](/hillwalking/corbetts/shalloch-on-minnoch) — gives a long February ridge round. [Corserine](/hillwalking/corbetts/corserine) at the heart of the Rhinns of Kells, with the long ridge of Donalds south to [Meikle Millyea](/hillwalking/donalds/meikle-millyea) and [Milldown](/hillwalking/donalds/milldown), is another full winter day.
The Dungeon Hills — [Mullwharchar](/hillwalking/grahams/mullwharchar), [Craignaw](/hillwalking/grahams/craignaw), Dungeon Hill — are one of the wildest pockets of southern Scotland; the [Back Hill of Bush bothy](/bothies/back-hill-of-bush) gives the only practical overnight base for the round in winter. [Cairnsmore of Carsphairn](/hillwalking/corbetts/cairnsmore-of-carsphairn), [Cairnsmore of Fleet](/hillwalking/grahams/cairnsmore-of-fleet) and [Lamachan Hill](/hillwalking/grahams/lamachan-hill) give isolated single-hill winter days. The [7stanes](/mountain-biking) trail centres — Kirroughtree, Glentrool, Dalbeattie, Mabie, Ae Forest — are open for winter riding when conditions allow. No insect tax anywhere.
