Galloway & the Southern Uplands Midges in April — Risk, Peak Times, Kit
Effectively no midges. Plan freely. The driest, breeziest, most under-rated low-midge zone in Scotland. The Galloway hills, the Merrick range and the Solway coast have a fraction of the pressure of the West Highlands even in July. A genuine peak-season refuge.
Current risk
Galloway & the Southern Uplands in April: None. Effectively no midges. Plan freely.
When they bite
Out of season — no significant biting activity in Galloway & the Southern Uplands this month. First proper warmth across the Solway coast and the lower glens. Galloway Forest tops still cool. Ground temperatures still below the midge emergence threshold. Drier than the equivalent April week in the west Highlands.

Tactical notes
April is the last reliably midge-free month in Galloway, and one of the most under-rated visiting windows of the year for the south-west. The Solway coast gets the first warmth — Wigtownshire daffodils, primroses in the [Glen Trool](/glens/glen-trool) woodland, the first bluebells starting in the Mabie Forest. The midge population is still not emerging anywhere in the region; mid-April Galloway trips can include lochside camps, bothy nights and full hill rounds without any insect tax.
This is prime time for the long [Southern Upland Way](/long-distance/southern-upland-way) trip from Portpatrick. The Galloway sections — Portpatrick to Castle Douglas, then over the hills to St Mary's Loch — are at their best in April: dry firm ground, manageable shoulder-season weather, and the bracken just starting to colour after winter. The [Cross Borders Drove Road](/long-distance/cross-borders-drove-road) and the [Mull of Galloway Trail](/long-distance/mull-of-galloway-trail) give two more clean LDP options.
For hill days, the Awful Hand range from Loch Trool is at its best of the shoulder season. The full traverse of [Merrick](/hillwalking/corbetts/merrick), [Kirriereoch Hill](/hillwalking/donalds/kirriereoch-hill) and [Shalloch on Minnoch](/hillwalking/corbetts/shalloch-on-minnoch) works with long daylight and clean ground. [Corserine](/hillwalking/corbetts/corserine) and the Rhinns of Kells with its Donald chain — [Carlin's Cairn](/hillwalking/donalds/carlins-cairn), [Meikle Millyea](/hillwalking/donalds/meikle-millyea), [Milldown](/hillwalking/donalds/milldown) — give the same. The Dungeon Hills round from [Back Hill of Bush bothy](/bothies/back-hill-of-bush) covers [Mullwharchar](/hillwalking/grahams/mullwharchar), [Craignaw](/hillwalking/grahams/craignaw) and the surrounding granite tops with no midge consideration whatsoever. The [Kirroughtree](/mountain-biking/trail-centres/kirroughtree) Black Craigs red trail — widely rated the best red in the UK — is at peak April condition. [Cairnsmore of Fleet](/hillwalking/grahams/cairnsmore-of-fleet) and [Lamachan Hill](/hillwalking/grahams/lamachan-hill) give shorter options. Head net stays in the gear cupboard.
