Galloway & the Southern Uplands Midges in November — Risk, Peak Times, Kit
Effectively no midges. Plan freely. The driest, breeziest, most under-rated low-midge zone in Scotland. The Galloway hills, the Merrick range and the Solway coast have a fraction of the pressure of the West Highlands even in July. A genuine peak-season refuge.

Tactical notes
November in Galloway is fully out of midge season — has been since mid-October — and one of the better atmospheric months of the year. The Atlantic storms that pummel Argyll and the Hebrides tend to track further north; Galloway sits in the relative rain shadow of the Lake District to the south and the Galloway Hills themselves. The result is a region that gets winter rain and the occasional snow shower but rarely the sustained gale-force conditions that characterise west-coast November.
The high tops can carry winter conditions from mid-month onwards. [Merrick](/hillwalking/corbetts/merrick) at 843m and the Awful Hand ridge above 700m, [Corserine](/hillwalking/corbetts/corserine) at 814m and the Rhinns of Kells main ridge, [Cairnsmore of Carsphairn](/hillwalking/corbetts/cairnsmore-of-carsphairn) — all become more committing as winter develops. The Dungeon Hills granite tops at [Mullwharchar](/hillwalking/grahams/mullwharchar) and [Craignaw](/hillwalking/grahams/craignaw) take on the bare-rock character that makes them feel more Highland than Lowland in November conditions.
For LDP walking, the southern sections of the [Southern Upland Way](/long-distance/southern-upland-way) remain doable in November weather windows. The [Mull of Galloway Trail](/long-distance/mull-of-galloway-trail) along Scotland's southernmost coast gives a sheltered Solway-side option. The [Back Hill of Bush bothy](/bothies/back-hill-of-bush) and [Tunskeen bothy](/bothies/tunskeen) in the heart of Galloway Forest Park are open, atmospheric and entirely free of biting insects — pack for cold and wet, not for bugs. The 7stanes trail centres at [Kirroughtree](/mountain-biking/trail-centres/kirroughtree), [Mabie](/mountain-biking/trail-centres/mabie) and [Ae Forest](/mountain-biking/trail-centres/ae-forest) are workable in dry November windows. Galloway Forest Park Dark Sky observation is at peak season with the longest dark hours combined with often clear autumn-winter air. Head net stays at home; insect tax zero.
