Galloway & the Southern Uplands Midges in March — Risk, Peak Times, Kit
Effectively no midges. Plan freely. The driest, breeziest, most under-rated low-midge zone in Scotland. The Galloway hills, the Merrick range and the Solway coast have a fraction of the pressure of the West Highlands even in July. A genuine peak-season refuge.

Tactical notes
March is shoulder winter in Galloway. The high tops of the Awful Hand and the Rhinns of Kells retain winter conditions through the month; the lower hills transition to spring; the [Southern Upland Way](/long-distance/southern-upland-way) sees its first east-bound walkers from Portpatrick. The midge population is still fully dormant; this is the last reliably clean shoulder month before the May transition that starts the season elsewhere in Scotland (and barely registers in Galloway).
This is one of the right windows for the long [Southern Upland Way](/long-distance/southern-upland-way) attempt from Portpatrick to Cockburnspath — 341km coast-to-coast, with the Galloway sections forming the first two weeks. March walkers get the dry firm ground, manageable shoulder-season weather, and zero insect tax that summer walkers pay for in midges. The [Mull of Galloway Trail](/long-distance/mull-of-galloway-trail) along Scotland's southernmost coast and the [Cross Borders Drove Road](/long-distance/cross-borders-drove-road) into the Southern Uplands work similarly.
For hill days, the Awful Hand range from [Glen Trool](/glens/glen-trool) gives a long March round. The full ridge — [Merrick](/hillwalking/corbetts/merrick), [Kirriereoch Hill](/hillwalking/donalds/kirriereoch-hill), [Shalloch on Minnoch](/hillwalking/corbetts/shalloch-on-minnoch) — works on the long-daylight days. [Corserine](/hillwalking/corbetts/corserine) and the Rhinns of Kells Donald chain ([Carlin's Cairn](/hillwalking/donalds/carlins-cairn), [Meikle Millyea](/hillwalking/donalds/meikle-millyea), [Milldown](/hillwalking/donalds/milldown)) give a long ridge day. The 7stanes trail centres at [Kirroughtree](/mountain-biking/trail-centres/kirroughtree), [Glentrool](/mountain-biking/trail-centres/glentrool) and [Dalbeattie](/mountain-biking/trail-centres/dalbeattie) are at their best March condition — dry granite, no midges. Head net unnecessary; pack waterproofs and weather-window discipline.
