Galloway & the Southern Uplands Midges in December — Risk, Peak Times, Kit

Tactical notes
December in Galloway is mid-winter with the structural southern-Scotland advantage: drier than Lochaber, less storm-exposed than the Outer Hebrides, gentler than the Cairngorms, with a regional landscape that retains its distinctive granite-and-rolling-hill character throughout the year. The midge population is fully dormant across the entire region and won't be a planning consideration again until the following May. Head net stays out of the kit list entirely.
The Awful Hand range and the Rhinns of Kells become serious winter propositions in proper December conditions. [Merrick](/hillwalking/corbetts/merrick) from Bruce's Stone is the canonical December introductory winter Munro-equivalent — short approach, good path, the summit view extends from the Lake District to the Mull of Kintyre to Arran. The full Awful Hand traverse with [Kirriereoch Hill](/hillwalking/donalds/kirriereoch-hill) and [Shalloch on Minnoch](/hillwalking/corbetts/shalloch-on-minnoch) gives a long winter ridge day. [Corserine](/hillwalking/corbetts/corserine) and the Rhinns of Kells Donald chain — [Carlin's Cairn](/hillwalking/donalds/carlins-cairn), [Meikle Millyea](/hillwalking/donalds/meikle-millyea), [Milldown](/hillwalking/donalds/milldown) — give a long winter ridge round.
The Dungeon Hills granite tops — [Mullwharchar](/hillwalking/grahams/mullwharchar), [Craignaw](/hillwalking/grahams/craignaw) — with the [Back Hill of Bush bothy](/bothies/back-hill-of-bush) as base, give some of the most atmospheric December bothy experiences in southern Scotland. [Cairnsmore of Carsphairn](/hillwalking/corbetts/cairnsmore-of-carsphairn) and [Cairnsmore of Fleet](/hillwalking/grahams/cairnsmore-of-fleet) give isolated single-hill December days. [Lamachan Hill](/hillwalking/grahams/lamachan-hill) and [Millfore](/hillwalking/grahams/millfore) from Loch Trool give shorter options. The Solway coast at the [Mull of Galloway Trail](/long-distance/mull-of-galloway-trail) sees atmospheric December storm light. The [Galloway Forest Park](/regions/galloway) Dark Sky Park is at peak observation season with the longest dark hours of the year. The Galloway year ends as it begins: dry by Scottish winter standards, gentler than the Highlands, and entirely free of insects.
