Sgor Gaibhre
Sgòr Gaibhre (955m) — "peak of the goats" — is one of the two Corrour Munros, paired with Càrn Dearg above the south side of Loch Ossian. The hill stands in genuinely remote country between the Ben Alder forest and the Rannoch Moor wilderness, reached most evocatively by ScotRail train to Corrour — one of Britain's most isolated halts. The summit gives commanding views across the Moor and into Ben Alder country.

Standard route

Catch the ScotRail West Highland Line service to Corrour Station (limited timetable). From the station walk east along the Loch Ossian shore, then south up the Allt Eigheach into the high country. Climb the broad north ridge of Sgòr Gaibhre directly to the summit, then continue north to Càrn Dearg for the second Munro. Return to Corrour for the train. Around 19km return with 1100m of ascent for the pair — a long day requiring careful train timing.
Terrain
The Loch Ossian shore path follows firm landrover surface along the lochside. Beyond the loch the surface becomes rough heathery moor with no clear path. The north ridge of Sgòr Gaibhre is broad short grass and gravel — easy walking with a small cairn at the summit. The connecting ridge to Càrn Dearg is broad mossy turf. The Corrour Station Restaurant offers shelter while waiting for trains.
In winter
A serious remote winter day. The Corrour train service is limited and dependent on weather; missed trains can mean significant problems. The broad summits drift heavily and offer few features for whiteout navigation. Mobile reception is absent throughout. SAIS Lochaber is the closest formal forecast area. Plan train timing carefully.
This hill is in the Creag Meagaidh SAIS forecast area. Check SAIS forecasts in winter (December–April).
