Argyll Midges in August — Risk, Peak Times, Kit
Swarms likely. Consider relocating to coast, altitude or breezy ground. Mainland west-coast pressure with the same Atlantic humidity as Lochaber. Kintyre, Cowal, Knapdale and the islands (Mull, Jura, Islay, Arran) all carry the burden — sheltered woodland and lochside camps are the worst.
Current risk
Argyll in August: Severe. Swarms likely. Consider relocating to coast, altitude or breezy ground.
When they bite
Peak biting windows are dawn 5–8am and dusk 7–10pm. Continuing peak. Second-generation midges fully matured. Often the wettest month with high after-rain humidity. Sheltered sea-loch heads remain at maximum biting intensity through the month.
What to wear
- Smidge repellent (75ml)
- LifeSystems head net
- Light-coloured long-sleeve baselayer — midges have a strong preference for dark clothing.
Tactical notes
August in Argyll is functionally the same as July — peak population, peak humidity, peak sheltered-glen pressure. The big Argyll August trap: visitors arriving from elsewhere in the UK who book a cabin or campervan pitch at the head of Loch Awe, on the Glen Etive lay-bys, or by the loch shore at Lochgoilhead, expecting West Highland scenery and getting West Highland insects. The Lochside campsites at the Inveraray end of Loch Fyne, the Crinan area, and the Loch Long campsite at Ardgartan all run at high pressure through August.
The high mountain calculus is unchanged. [Ben Donich](/hillwalking/corbetts/ben-donich), [The Brack](/hillwalking/corbetts/the-brack) and [Cnoc Coinnich](/hillwalking/corbetts/cnoc-coinnich) give the standard Argyll Forest Park Corbett trio with proper wind exposure on the ridges. [Beinn Bhuidhe](/hillwalking/corbetts/beinn-bhuidhe) and [Beinn Bheula](/hillwalking/corbetts/beinn-bheula) work on the same model — wind-exposed summit, sheltered approach. The bothies [Inbhir Fhaolain](/bothies/inbhir-fhaolain), [Caolasnacon](/bothies/caolasnacon) and [Ruin Dorcha](/bothies/ruin-dorcha) in the Glen Etive / Lochaber border country need full midge kit and disciplined door management.
The coastal and island advantage remains. Arran's [Goat Fell](/hillwalking/corbetts/goat-fell), [Cir Mhor](/hillwalking/corbetts/cir-mhor) and [Caisteal Abhail](/hillwalking/corbetts/caisteal-abhail) give workable August ridge days; the granite-A'Chir scramble is at its best in August on dry rock. Jura with [Beinn an Oir](/hillwalking/corbetts/beinn-an-oir) and [Glenbatrick bothy](/bothies/glenbatrick) remains the standout low-pressure escape on this side of the country. Mull's Ben More and [Dun da Ghaoithe](/hillwalking/corbetts/dun-da-ghaoithe) with [Tomsleibhe bothy](/bothies/tomsleibhe) work cleanly. The [Kintyre Way](/long-distance/kintyre-way) — the long peninsula from Tarbert to Machrihanish — is the standout low-midge LDP in Argyll, almost entirely coastal and continuously wind-exposed.
