None risk December Argyll

Argyll Midges in December — Risk, Peak Times, Kit

Effectively no midges. Plan freely. Mainland west-coast pressure with the same Atlantic humidity as Lochaber. Kintyre, Cowal, Knapdale and the islands (Mull, Jura, Islay, Arran) all carry the burden — sheltered woodland and lochside camps are the worst.

Current risk

Argyll in December: None. Effectively no midges. Plan freely.

When they bite

Out of season — no significant biting activity in Argyll this month. Shortest daylight, sustained Atlantic depressions. Snow possible on the higher Argyll Corbetts and the Arran ridge. Adult midge population fully dormant.

What to wear

No specific kit needed for midges in Argyll this month. Build the kit list around weather, daylight and route choice.

Tactical notes

December in Argyll is mid-winter at the Atlantic edge: short days, frequent storms, heavy rainfall in the sheltered sea-loch glens, and zero midge activity anywhere from Kintyre to Glen Etive. Head net stays out of the kit list entirely.

What December asks for is winter judgement. The Argyll Forest Park Corbetts — [Ben Donich](/hillwalking/corbetts/ben-donich), [The Brack](/hillwalking/corbetts/the-brack), [Cnoc Coinnich](/hillwalking/corbetts/cnoc-coinnich) — become serious in proper winter conditions, with their short ascents from low altitude often hiding the severity of the summit weather. [Beinn Bhuidhe](/hillwalking/corbetts/beinn-bhuidhe) above Glen Fyne and [Beinn Bheula](/hillwalking/corbetts/beinn-bheula) on Cowal are long isolated days with very short daylight windows.

The Arran granite ridge ([Goat Fell](/hillwalking/corbetts/goat-fell), [Cir Mhor](/hillwalking/corbetts/cir-mhor), [Caisteal Abhail](/hillwalking/corbetts/caisteal-abhail), [Beinn Tarsuinn](/hillwalking/corbetts/beinn-tarsuinn)) in winter conditions becomes a serious technical proposition — the A'Chir scrambling section is committed and unforgiving in ice. Jura's Paps with [Beinn an Oir](/hillwalking/corbetts/beinn-an-oir) and the [Glenbatrick bothy](/bothies/glenbatrick) approach are at their most isolated. Mull with [Dun da Ghaoithe](/hillwalking/corbetts/dun-da-ghaoithe), Ben More and [Tomsleibhe bothy](/bothies/tomsleibhe) gives a quieter island option. The inland bothies — [Inbhir Fhaolain](/bothies/inbhir-fhaolain), [Caolasnacon](/bothies/caolasnacon), [Ruin Dorcha](/bothies/ruin-dorcha) — are open, atmospheric and entirely insect-free; need a proper four-season sleeping system because the buildings are cold and the sea-loch climate is wet. The Argyll year ends as it begins: wet, dark, weather-defined, and free of biting pressure.
