Argyll Midges in May — Risk, Peak Times, Kit
Noticeable at dawn and dusk. Repellent recommended. Mainland west-coast pressure with the same Atlantic humidity as Lochaber. Kintyre, Cowal, Knapdale and the islands (Mull, Jura, Islay, Arran) all carry the burden — sheltered woodland and lochside camps are the worst.
Current risk
Argyll in May: Moderate. Noticeable at dawn and dusk. Repellent recommended.
When they bite
Peak biting windows are dawn 6–8am and dusk 5–7pm. First proper warmth across the sheltered sea-loch heads. Loch Etive, Loch Awe and Loch Fyne shoreline produce the first hatches by mid-month. Coast and exposed islands lag by 1-2 weeks.
What to wear
- Smidge repellent (75ml)
- Light-coloured long-sleeve baselayer — midges have a strong preference for dark clothing.
Tactical notes
May is the transition month in Argyll. The first three weeks are typically clean across the whole region — sheltered glen heads and exposed coast alike. The last week often delivers the first emergence in the canonical Argyll trap zones: the head of Loch Etive at Kinlochetive, the [Glen Etive](/glens/glen-etive) campervan strip, the Loch Awe shore at Kilchurn, the head of Loch Fyne at Cairndow, and the Lochgoilhead lay-bys. All of these are sheltered sea-loch heads where warm humid air pools on a calm late-May evening and the first emergence catches the early-season visitors who haven't read the script.
This is the last reliable clean window for the long sheltered routes. The full [Cowal Way](/long-distance/cowal-way) from Portavadie to Inveruglas, the [Three Lochs Way](/long-distance/three-lochs-way) Loch Lomond–Loch Long traverse, the West Highland Way crossing of [Glen Falloch](/glens/glen-falloch) — all manageable with a 75ml Smidge as insurance. The Argyll Forest Park Corbett cluster ([Ben Donich](/hillwalking/corbetts/ben-donich), [The Brack](/hillwalking/corbetts/the-brack), [Cnoc Coinnich](/hillwalking/corbetts/cnoc-coinnich)) gives reliably wind-exposed ridge days with negligible insect tax.
The coast and the breezier islands are at their absolute best. The Arran ridge ([Goat Fell](/hillwalking/corbetts/goat-fell), [Caisteal Abhail](/hillwalking/corbetts/caisteal-abhail), [Cir Mhor](/hillwalking/corbetts/cir-mhor)), the Jura Paps with [Beinn an Oir](/hillwalking/corbetts/beinn-an-oir), Mull's Ben More and [Dun da Ghaoithe](/hillwalking/corbetts/dun-da-ghaoithe) — all clean. The [Kintyre Way](/long-distance/kintyre-way) gives the lowest-pressure long walk in Argyll proper; the [Arran Coastal Way](/long-distance/arran-coastal-way) similarly benefits from continuous coastal wind exposure. The Inveraray–Lochgilphead–Crinan corridor is the geographic dividing line where sheltered-glen risk meets coastal escape: lean towards the coast as the month progresses.
