None risk January Argyll

Argyll Midges in January — Risk, Peak Times, Kit

Effectively no midges. Plan freely. Mainland west-coast pressure with the same Atlantic humidity as Lochaber. Kintyre, Cowal, Knapdale and the islands (Mull, Jura, Islay, Arran) all carry the burden — sheltered woodland and lochside camps are the worst.

Current risk

Argyll in January: None. Effectively no midges. Plan freely.

When they bite

Out of season — no significant biting activity in Argyll this month. Mild oceanic winter (sea moderates the air). Average highs around 7°C on the coast. Atlantic depressions frequent; rainfall heavy. Adult midge population fully dormant.

What to wear

No specific kit needed for midges in Argyll this month. Build the kit list around weather, daylight and route choice.

Tactical notes

January in Argyll is wet, dark and entirely midge-free. The classic Argyll problem of summer — sheltered sea-loch geometry trapping warm humid air on calm days — runs in reverse in winter: those same sea lochs (Etive, Awe, Fyne, Goil, Long) collect heavy cold rain and produce some of the wettest January conditions in Scotland. No part of the region produces any midge activity worth planning around.

The Argyll Forest Park Corbetts above Arrochar and Lochgoilhead give serious winter days. [Ben Donich](/hillwalking/corbetts/ben-donich), [The Brack](/hillwalking/corbetts/the-brack) and [Cnoc Coinnich](/hillwalking/corbetts/cnoc-coinnich) are short ascents with proper exposure — they catch the prevailing Atlantic systems first and frequently sit in cloud all day. The hill above Inveraray, [Beinn Bhuidhe](/hillwalking/corbetts/beinn-bhuidhe), is a long approach from Glen Fyne and a serious winter undertaking. [Beinn Bheula](/hillwalking/corbetts/beinn-bheula) on Cowal gives a wilder isolated Corbett in good winter conditions.

The sea-loch coast and the islands stay accessible. [Glenbatrick bothy](/bothies/glenbatrick) on the west coast of Jura is a serious 12km walk-in from the road at Inverlussa but gives one of the most atmospheric Argyll winter bothy nights — quiet, exposed Atlantic-facing, no insects. The [Inbhir Fhaolain](/bothies/inbhir-fhaolain) and [Caolasnacon](/bothies/caolasnacon) bothies at the Lochaber/Argyll border give shorter walk-ins. The [Cowal Way](/long-distance/cowal-way), [Kintyre Way](/long-distance/kintyre-way) and [Arran Coastal Way](/long-distance/arran-coastal-way) are all walkable in shoulder January conditions if you can find a settled week between depressions. No insect tax anywhere. Build the pack around proper waterproofs and short daylight.
