Argyll Midges in March — Risk, Peak Times, Kit

Effectively no midges. Plan freely. Mainland west-coast pressure with the same Atlantic humidity as Lochaber. Kintyre, Cowal, Knapdale and the islands (Mull, Jura, Islay, Arran) all carry the burden — sheltered woodland and lochside camps are the worst.

Current risk

Argyll in March: None. Effectively no midges. Plan freely.

When they bite

Out of season — no significant biting activity in Argyll this month. Daylight extending to over 12 hours by month-end. Snow lie persisting on the higher Argyll Corbetts but retreating off the lower hills. Ground temperatures still below the midge emergence threshold.

What to wear

No specific kit needed for midges in Argyll this month. Build the kit list around weather, daylight and route choice.

Tactical notes

March is shoulder winter in Argyll. The Argyll Forest Park transitions from winter to mixed conditions during the month — [Ben Donich](/hillwalking/corbetts/ben-donich), [The Brack](/hillwalking/corbetts/the-brack) and [Cnoc Coinnich](/hillwalking/corbetts/cnoc-coinnich) move from full winter to scrambling-grade by month-end. The midge population remains entirely dormant; this is the last reliably clean shoulder month before the May transition.

This is the right window for the longer Argyll routes. The full [Cowal Way](/long-distance/cowal-way) (from Portavadie to Inveruglas), the [Arran Coastal Way](/long-distance/arran-coastal-way) (full circumnavigation of Arran), the [Kintyre Way](/long-distance/kintyre-way) (Tarbert to Machrihanish), and the [Three Lochs Way](/long-distance/three-lochs-way) (Loch Lomond to Loch Long) are all at their best in March: dry firm ground, manageable daylight, no insect tax. The full [Crinan Canal](/long-distance/three-lochs-way) towpath, the inland approach to Knapdale beaver sites — all benign.

For hill days, the Arran cluster ([Goat Fell](/hillwalking/corbetts/goat-fell), [Cir Mhor](/hillwalking/corbetts/cir-mhor), [Caisteal Abhail](/hillwalking/corbetts/caisteal-abhail)) gives a long weekend with Glen Rosa as base. The Paps of Jura — [Beinn an Oir](/hillwalking/corbetts/beinn-an-oir) the headline — give a multi-day Jura trip from the Feolin ferry, using [Glenbatrick bothy](/bothies/glenbatrick) as base. Mull works similarly with [Tomsleibhe bothy](/bothies/tomsleibhe) and Ben More. Inland, [Beinn Bhuidhe](/hillwalking/corbetts/beinn-bhuidhe) above Glen Fyne and [Beinn Bheula](/hillwalking/corbetts/beinn-bheula) on Cowal give isolated single-summit days. Head net unnecessary; pack for changeable shoulder-spring weather.
