Cairnsmore of Fleet
A great granite whaleback above the Cree estuary, Cairnsmore of Fleet is one of three Cairnsmores in Galloway and the southernmost 2000-foot Donald. The cairn-strewn summit hosts a memorial to wartime aircrew who came to grief on its broad upper slopes during World War Two.

Standard route
heather moorland 55% · grass and rushes 25% · granite summit 20%
The standard ascent is the Cairnsmore Path from the National Nature Reserve car park at Cairnsmore House, climbing steadily through oak wood, then plantation, then onto the open hill via Knee of Cairnsmore.
Terrain
A constructed stone path tackles most of the steep middle section — a fine piece of work that has saved the hillside from erosion. Higher up the path frays into a number of trodden lines through close-cropped sward.
In winter
Catches Solway weather first and hardest. Wet snow, freezing fog and rime ice are more common than dry powder. The summit memorial is a stark sight in winter — and a sobering reminder that the cloud base often clips this hill.
