Standard route
heather moorland 60% · grass moorland 30% · rocky summit 10%
From the car park at the far road end of Glen Trool, take the forest road, then break up onto open ground for the steep pull to the ridge. Around 21km with 1340m of climb for the usual circuit over Lamachan Hill and Curleywee.
Terrain
Granite slabs and tussock — typical Galloway interior. Wet ground on the lower approach gives way to firmer ground on the ridge itself.
In winter
Galloway granite ices over in freeze-thaw and the slabby summit area becomes treacherous. South-westerly fronts dump rain rather than snow most winters.
