Sron a' Choire Chnapanaich (Sron a' Choire Chnapanich)

Sròn a' Choire Chnapanaich is the high point of the rolling moorland north of Glen Lyon, a 835m Corbett standing apart from the better-known Lawers Munros across the loch. The hill is essentially a long broad plateau with steep north-facing flanks plunging into Lochan Daimh — a man-made reservoir — and gentler grassy slopes to the south. The remoteness of Glen Lyon, often called Scotland's longest, gentlest and loneliest glen, makes the drive in part of the appeal.

Gaelic: “nose, of the, corrie, of the, corrie” · Pronunciation: strawn uh chor-a chnapanaich (sron uh chor-a chnapanich)

Standard route

estate track 25% · bog and heather 45% · plateau grass 20% · summit area 10%

11km · 650m ascent · 5 hrs

Park near Pubil at the head of Glen Lyon (NN463418), where the public road ends below the Stuchd an Lochain dam. From the dam wall, follow the rough track south-east along the north shore of Lochan Daimh, climbing onto the broad south ridge of Sròn a' Choire Chnapanaich. The route gains the broad summit plateau gradually with no rocky difficulties. For the natural pairing, descend west and reclimb Stuchd an Lochain (Munro) on the same dam-side approach. Allow 5–6 hours for Sròn a' Choire Chnapanaich alone.

Terrain

Reservoir-side track for the first part — flat, easy. Off the track the going is heather and peat with peat hags in the upper bowl. The summit plateau is broad and featureless; a vague path runs to the cairn but is easy to lose. Drier underfoot than the western Corbetts thanks to the rain-shadow location.

In winter

A friendly winter Corbett — gentle gradients, no avalanche issues on the standard line, and reliable snow cover from January through March. The Glen Lyon road is long and can be slow in winter; check for snow gates beyond Bridge of Balgie. Cornices form on the north side above Lochan Daimh — give them a wide berth.
