Low risk May Skye & the Small Isles

Skye & the Small Isles Midges in May — Risk, Peak Times, Kit

Background pressure only. Head net optional. Skye sees its share — the Cuillin glens are sheltered enough to hold midges, and low-level coastal walks pass through hostile patches at dawn. Rum, Eigg, and Muck range from mild (windy headlands) to severe (sheltered shores).

Current risk

Skye & the Small Isles in May: Low. Background pressure only. Head net optional.

When they bite

Peak biting windows are dawn 6–8am and dusk 5–7pm. Warmest spring conditions arrive. Sea-surface temperatures still relatively cool which delays the midge season vs the mainland west coast by 1-2 weeks. First emergence typically in the second half of the month in Glen Brittle, Sligachan and the lowest sheltered Rum forest.

What to wear

  • Smidge repellent (75ml)
  • Light-coloured long-sleeve baselayer — midges have a strong preference for dark clothing.

Tactical notes

May is the transition month on Skye and the Small Isles. The cool surrounding sea slightly delays the start of midge season versus the mainland — by 1-2 weeks compared with Lochaber. The first three weeks of May are typically still effectively midge-free everywhere. The last week often delivers the first emergence in the deep sheltered glens — [Glen Brittle](/glens/glen-brittle), [Glen Sligachan](/glens/glen-sligachan) and the bog floor around the Sligachan campsite are the canonical first-active sites of the Skye midge calendar.

This is therefore the last reliable clean window for the Cuillin classics. [Sgurr nan Gillean](/hillwalking/munros/sgurr-nan-gillean) via the standard Tourist Route, [Bruach na Frithe](/hillwalking/munros/bruach-na-frithe) — Skye's most accessible Munro — and the full traverse round to [Am Basteir](/hillwalking/munros/am-basteir) all work without midge pressure if attempted in the first three weeks. The [Inaccessible Pinnacle](/hillwalking/munros/sgurr-dearg-inaccessible-pinnacle) — the only Scottish Munro that requires technical rock climbing to summit — is at its busiest of the year and the queue forms early; pitch on Glen Brittle campsite at this stage and you'll get the IP day without significant insect tax.

The Small Isles in May are at their best of the year. The [Skye Trail](/long-distance/skye-trail) from Rubha Hunish southward is at peak May conditions: long evenings, manageable bog, brilliant light. The Trotternish ridge — [Meall na Suiramach](/hillwalking/marilyns/meall-na-suiramach) at the Quiraing, [Baca Ruadh](/hillwalking/marilyns/baca-ruadh) on the main spine — stays effectively midge-free even in late May because of the consistent wind on the exposed ridge crest. [Camasunary bothy](/bothies/camasunary), [Dibidil](/bothies/dibidil) on Rum, [Tomsleibhe](/bothies/tomsleibhe) on Mull — all manageable with a 75ml Smidge as insurance rather than a constant companion.
