Skye & the Small Isles Midges in October — Risk, Peak Times, Kit
Background pressure only. Head net optional. Skye sees its share — the Cuillin glens are sheltered enough to hold midges, and low-level coastal walks pass through hostile patches at dawn. Rum, Eigg, and Muck range from mild (windy headlands) to severe (sheltered shores).
Current risk
Skye & the Small Isles in October: Low. Background pressure only. Head net optional.
When they bite
Peak biting windows are dawn 6–8am and dusk 5–7pm. Cold air consistent across the region. Adult midge activity essentially over; only freak warm calm October afternoons might trigger residual activity in the deepest sheltered Cuillin glens. First proper Atlantic autumn storms arrive.
What to wear
- Smidge repellent (75ml)
- Light-coloured long-sleeve baselayer — midges have a strong preference for dark clothing.
Tactical notes
October on Skye and the Small Isles is post-season for midges and prime season for atmosphere. The Cuillin colour changes — the surrounding moorland bracken turns rust and the Black Cuillin contrast against autumn light is genuinely spectacular. The midge season is essentially over: only freak warm calm afternoons might wake a small residual population in the very lowest sheltered Glen Brittle bog. By mid-October it's effectively done across the region.
This is one of the better months for the lower-ground Skye walks. The [Skye Trail](/long-distance/skye-trail) Trotternish sections at peak autumn colour are excellent; the [Quiraing](/hillwalking/marilyns/meall-na-suiramach) ridge walk with low-angle October light is one of the best half-days in Scotland. The coast — Elgol, Talisker Bay, Neist Point — all at their stormy best with no insect tax. The [Cuillin Ridge Traverse](/blog/cuillin-ridge-traverse-guide) is no longer a midge problem but becomes a daylight problem: under 11 hours by month-end and dropping fast, so the standard 18-20 hour traverse runs straight into the dark at both ends.
The Small Isles ferry transitions back to autumn schedule mid-month. Rum stays accessible but commitment grows — bothy stays at [Dibidil](/bothies/dibidil) need warm gear, working stove discipline, and a willingness to bail to the morning ferry rather than the afternoon. [Camasunary](/bothies/camasunary) is at its most atmospheric: a long sea-pebble bay with the Cuillin behind, free of biting insects, and quiet enough that you can have the bothy to yourselves on a weekday night. [Tomsleibhe](/bothies/tomsleibhe) on Mull and the Ben More on Mull round work cleanly. Head net at the bottom of the pack; the cost of October is weather, ferry reliability and short days.
