Skye & the Small Isles Midges in November — Risk, Peak Times, Kit

Effectively no midges. Plan freely. Skye sees its share — the Cuillin glens are sheltered enough to hold midges, and low-level coastal walks pass through hostile patches at dawn. Rum, Eigg, and Muck range from mild (windy headlands) to severe (sheltered shores).

Tactical notes

November on Skye is fully out of midge season and full Atlantic storm weather. The midge population is back to winter dormancy — eggs and larvae in the wet ground, no flight activity until at least May. The weather, ferry reliability and the very short daylight take over as the planning constraints.

The Cuillin enters first proper winter conditions typically in the second half of the month. The standard summer scrambling routes get harder, slower and more committing as the gabbro glazes and snow patches appear in the high gullies. The [Cuillin Ridge Traverse](/blog/cuillin-ridge-traverse-guide) ceases to be a sensible objective for non-winter mountaineers. [Sgurr Alasdair](/hillwalking/munros/sgurr-alasdair) and [Sgurr nan Gillean](/hillwalking/munros/sgurr-nan-gillean) by their standard routes need careful weather-window judgement.

For lower-pressure days, Skye in November is empty, atmospheric and entirely free of insects. The Trotternish ridge walks — [Meall na Suiramach](/hillwalking/marilyns/meall-na-suiramach) at the Quiraing, [Baca Ruadh](/hillwalking/marilyns/baca-ruadh) on the main spine — give big island days in the right weather window. [Glamaig](/hillwalking/corbetts/glamaig-sgurr-mhairi) from Sligachan in stormy conditions is one of the more atmospheric Corbett days available. The Small Isles drop to winter ferry schedule with fewer crossings — Rum becomes a serious commitment if a weather window closes mid-stay. [Camasunary](/bothies/camasunary) and [Tomsleibhe](/bothies/tomsleibhe) are open and very quiet. Head net stays at home; storm-rated tent or bothy stove come instead.
