Skye & the Small Isles Midges in March — Risk, Peak Times, Kit
Effectively no midges. Plan freely. Skye sees its share — the Cuillin glens are sheltered enough to hold midges, and low-level coastal walks pass through hostile patches at dawn. Rum, Eigg, and Muck range from mild (windy headlands) to severe (sheltered shores).
Current risk
Skye & the Small Isles in March: None. Effectively no midges. Plan freely.
When they bite
Out of season — no significant biting activity in Skye & the Small Isles this month. Daylight extending fast. Cuillin snow lie still substantial. Coastal warmth creeping up to high single digits. No adult midge activity across the region.
What to wear
No specific kit needed for midges in Skye & the Small Isles this month. Build the kit list around weather, daylight and route choice.
Tactical notes
March is shoulder winter on Skye and the Small Isles. The Cuillin retains good winter conditions on its higher faces — the gully routes on Sgurr nan Gillean and Am Basteir give classic Scottish winter days well into the month — while the lower hills and the coast start to feel the first hints of spring. Midge activity remains zero everywhere; the eggs and larvae are still in the wet ground.
This is the best month of the year for the long Trotternish walks. The full ridge from Rubha Hunish south to Storr — the spine of the [Skye Trail](/long-distance/skye-trail) — is at its best in late March: snow lying in the sheltered hollows, ground firm, daylight stretching to 12 hours, and no insect pressure at all. Same is true of the long walk in to [Camasunary bothy](/bothies/camasunary) from Sligachan, the route past Loch na Crèitheach to [Bla Bheinn](/hillwalking/munros/blabheinn-bla-bheinn) — all firm underfoot and entirely midge-free.
The Small Isles ferry timetable picks up from late March. Eigg becomes more accessible and the An Sgùrr ridge gives a perfect island day in shoulder conditions. Rum is still a serious commitment — [Dibidil bothy](/bothies/dibidil) on the south coast and the Rum Cuillin round of [Askival](/hillwalking/corbetts/askival) and [Ainshval](/hillwalking/corbetts/ainshval) need full mountain kit but no midge kit. [Tomsleibhe](/bothies/tomsleibhe) on Mull and the routes around Ben More on Mull are similarly clean. Head net unnecessary; build the pack around shoulder-winter weather, river spates from snowmelt, and short-but-lengthening daylight.
