Cairngorms Midges in April — Risk, Peak Times, Kit

Effectively no midges. Plan freely. Subarctic plateau and dry continental climate keep the high tops nearly midge-free even in peak season. The wooded glens and Spey valley are a different story — sheltered, damp, and as bad as anywhere east of the watershed.

Current risk

Cairngorms in April: None. Effectively no midges. Plan freely.

When they bite

Out of season — no significant biting activity in Cairngorms this month. Longer days and warmer afternoons but mornings still cold and snow lie still common in the high corries. Conditions still well below the midge activity threshold across most of the region.

What to wear

No specific kit needed for midges in Cairngorms this month. Build the kit list around weather, daylight and route choice.

Tactical notes

April is the last reliably midge-free month in the Cairngorms. Average highs reach 9-10°C in the Strath Spey villages by mid-month and the high plateau remains in its winter regime — snow lying in north-facing corries, frequent overnight frosts, and a wind chill that keeps any early-emerging insects on the ground.

The first midges of the season *could* hatch in a particularly warm late-April window in the Insh Marshes or along the sheltered banks of the lower Spey, but this is the early end of the regional emergence and not something that affects walkers, campers or runners in the Cairngorms proper. [Glen Lui](/glens/glen-lui), Glen Derry, [Glen Feshie](/glens/glen-feshie), Glen More, the Northern Corries — all reliably free of biting midges throughout April.

A Cairngorms April trip is one of the best windows of the year. Long daylight (over 14 hours at the equinox), proper snow still on the high tops, low summer-tourist density, and zero midge pressure. Bothy nights at [Corrour](/bothies/corrour-bothy), [Hutchison](/bothies/hutchison-memorial-hut) or Bob Scott's are entirely insect-free. The wild camping spots around Loch Avon and the Loch Etchachan plateau are still in winter conditions but offer the same midge-free guarantee. If you're planning your first multi-day Cairngorms trip of the year, April is a strong shout — head net stays home, head torch and warm bag come instead.
