Cairngorms Midges in October — Risk, Peak Times, Kit
Background pressure only. Head net optional. Subarctic plateau and dry continental climate keep the high tops nearly midge-free even in peak season. The wooded glens and Spey valley are a different story — sheltered, damp, and as bad as anywhere east of the watershed.
Current risk
Cairngorms in October: Low. Background pressure only. Head net optional.
When they bite
Out of season — no significant biting activity in Cairngorms this month. Decisive cooling. Hard frosts on the plateau every clear night, frequent frosts in the glens by mid-month. The remaining adult midge population dies off through the first half of October.
What to wear
No specific kit needed for midges in Cairngorms this month. Build the kit list around weather, daylight and route choice.
Tactical notes
October closes the season. By mid-month the adult midge population in the Cairngorms is functionally gone — the autumn frost cycle has taken out the last of the summer adults, and any survivors are inactive enough not to be encountered. The first half of the month can still hold a small midge presence in particularly sheltered low spots on warm calm afternoons ([Glen Feshie](/glens/glen-feshie) woodland in particular), but it's a fraction of summer pressure.
The stalking season is in full swing across much of the eastern Cairngorms in October — co-ordinate with estate managers if you're moving off path through Mar, Invercauld or Glenfeshie Estate ground. The autumn colour at Glen Feshie and Rothiemurchus is at its peak in the second week.
For planning: stop carrying midge kit on Cairngorms trips by mid-October. The risk is low enough that you'd be unlucky to encounter biting numbers. Wild camping, bothy nights, multi-day traverses can all be planned without insect considerations. Daylight is the constraint — sunrise is past 7am by the end of the month, sunset before 6pm. The daylight tool matters more than the midge data for any October itinerary.
A late-October camp in upper Glen Derry, on the [Cairn Gorm](/hillwalking/munros/cairn-gorm) plateau, or at Loch Avon will encounter zero midges and possibly the first snow of the season. The transition from summer to winter conditions is fast and the midges are the part that finishes first.
