Cairngorms Midges in January — Risk, Peak Times, Kit
Effectively no midges. Plan freely. Subarctic plateau and dry continental climate keep the high tops nearly midge-free even in peak season. The wooded glens and Spey valley are a different story — sheltered, damp, and as bad as anywhere east of the watershed.
Current risk
Cairngorms in January: None. Effectively no midges. Plan freely.
When they bite
Out of season — no significant biting activity in Cairngorms this month. Frozen ground, average highs around 3°C and routine sub-zero nights keep the adult midge population at zero across the region. Snow lies on the plateau and in the high glens.
What to wear
No specific kit needed for midges in Cairngorms this month. Build the kit list around weather, daylight and route choice.
Tactical notes
January is the easiest month of the year. Adult midges need temperatures above about 10°C to fly and a humid, sheltered microclimate to breed — January in the Cairngorms gives them neither. [Cairn Gorm](/hillwalking/munros/cairn-gorm), [Ben Macdui](/hillwalking/munros/ben-macdui-beinn-macduibh), [Braeriach](/hillwalking/munros/braeriach) and the Lairig Ghru are frozen, the Spey is running cold, and the deep glens of [Glen Lui](/glens/glen-lui) and Glen Derry are typically under snow above 400m.
The practical takeaway: nothing about midges should factor into a January Cairngorms trip. Build the kit list around cold, wind, daylight (Naismith calculator and the daylight tool both matter more than midges here), and snow conditions. The Mountain Bothies Association huts at Bob Scott's, [Hutchison](/bothies/hutchison-memorial-hut) and [Corrour](/bothies/corrour-bothy) are open and busy in winter — none of them need to factor midge pressure into their kit list this month.
If you're doing late evening lower-level walks around Glenmore, Rothiemurchus or Aviemore, the only insect activity you'll meet is the occasional cluster of overwintering ladybirds in the pine forest. Midge eggs and larvae are dormant in the wet ground but won't emerge until spring temperatures arrive — usually around mid-May in the Cairngorms.
Full credit for being able to wild camp in the Glenmore pines or by [Loch Morlich](/wild-swimming/loch-morlich) in January without thinking about head nets. Pay the daylight and cold-temperature debts instead.
