Cairngorms Midges in March — Risk, Peak Times, Kit

Effectively no midges. Plan freely. Subarctic plateau and dry continental climate keep the high tops nearly midge-free even in peak season. The wooded glens and Spey valley are a different story — sheltered, damp, and as bad as anywhere east of the watershed.

Current risk

Cairngorms in March: None. Effectively no midges. Plan freely.

When they bite

Out of season — no significant biting activity in Cairngorms this month. Daytime highs creeping up but most nights still below freezing, especially on the plateau. Snow lie persisting in the high glens and on the tops well into the month.

What to wear

No specific kit needed for midges in Cairngorms this month. Build the kit list around weather, daylight and route choice.

Tactical notes

March in the Cairngorms is shoulder winter. Snow conditions can still be excellent at altitude — the ski centre often runs late into the month and ski tourers are out in good numbers around [Cairn Gorm](/hillwalking/munros/cairn-gorm), [Cairn Toul](/hillwalking/munros/cairn-toul) and [Beinn a' Bhuird](/hillwalking/munros/beinn-a-bhuird-beinn-a-bhuird-north-top). From a midge perspective, the picture is unchanged: dormant population, no adult activity worth noting, no kit required.

There is one technical caveat. By the back end of March the lowest sheltered spots in the Spey valley — the Insh Marshes RSPB reserve, the boggy ground around Loch Garten, the lower banks of the Spey itself — start seeing the first hints of warm-weather insect activity in a particularly mild spring. But this is small, isolated, mainly non-biting species, and not something to plan around. The Cairngorm midge proper (*Culicoides impunctatus*) won't be flying anywhere in this region for another six to eight weeks.

If you're camping or running multi-day trips in March, prioritise winter kit, daylight, weather windows and route choice. Midge risk for any Cairngorms itinerary this month is effectively zero. A March camp on the floor of [Glen Feshie](/glens/glen-feshie) or by [Loch Morlich](/wild-swimming/loch-morlich) needs nothing more than a four-season sleeping system and good wind protection.
