Five days on the Cairngorm plateau

A backpacking traverse through the heart of Britain's only true alpine landscape — including a Corrour bothy night.

5 days challenging Best: Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep £200-£400 per person (mostly bothy/wild camp) Car-free realistic AviemoreLinn of Dee

The Cairngorm plateau is the closest thing Britain has to an Arctic landscape — high, exposed, navigationally serious, and capable of swallowing a navigation error for an entire day. Five days lets you traverse from Aviemore via Ben Macdui and Corrour Bothy down to Mar Lodge / Linn of Dee, taking in all of the Cairngorm 4000s en route if conditions allow.

This is a real backpacking trip. Carry tent, sleeping bag, stove, three days of food, and the full /kit/wild-camping list. Corrour bothy on the second night is one of the most iconic in Scotland but on summer weekends fills early — bring the tent anyway. Mobile signal is non-existent for most of the route.

Other itineraries

Five days on the Cairngorm plateau — common questions

What if the weather closes in?
Corrour bothy is a viable shelter point for an extra day. The Lairig Ghru pass provides an escape route to either Aviemore or Linn of Dee. Don't attempt the upper plateau in winds above 50mph or sustained cloud below 800m without strong navigation skills.
Can I do this in winter?
Yes, but it becomes a full winter mountaineering expedition. Add ice axe, crampons, B2 boots, avalanche transceiver/shovel/probe. See the /kit/winter-munro list. Book a winter skills course at Glenmore Lodge first.
What about midges?
High plateau is largely midge-free even in peak July. The bothy approaches and lower camps (Loch Avon shore, Derry pinewood) carry standard Cairngorm midge pressure — head net + Smidge are essential. See /kit/midge-survival.
